ANTHROPOLOGIST

POSITION OBJECTIVE


To conduct the anthropological function of Anangu Pitjantjatjara in order to enable the organisation to comply with the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981, in respect to interests and issues for Anangu Tjuta.

SALARY

 

$75,000 - $85,000  (depending on qualifications and experience) plus other entitlements

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. Conduct the anthropological and research function of Anangu PitjantjatjaraYankunytjatjara, with the highest level of professional competence.

  2. Independently organise and carry out research field trips largely in relation to land access, development projects and related heritage assessments.

  3. Assist in the storage of all cultural heritage research and information carried out by anthropologists and other research agents of Anangu Pitjantjatjara, in a manner that is both culturally appropriate (recognizing the sensitivity of information) and which develops Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara capacity to service the Anangu Tjuta.

  4. Consult fully with traditional Owners and other Anangu Tjuta in all matters relating to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, in order to ensure the acceptability and appropriateness of the development projects, in accordance with the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act.

  5. Assist in establishing, developing and applying culturally appropriate protocols, policies and procedures for consulting with traditional owners in relation to development projects, work and heritage impact assessments, and permit applications for access to the lands, and other forms of consultation.

  6. Collaborate fully with Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lawyers in order to ensure the instructions received from Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara, as well as legal advice, are properly understood by Traditional Owners and other Anangu Tjuta.

  7. Ensure and maintain effective liaison with other departments within the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara organisation.

  8. Plan and manage Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara anthropological work, in a timely and cooperative manner.

  9. Where requested, design and commission appropriate research in the area of traditional ownership, cultural heritage, and social and economic assessment in order to assist Anangu Pitjantjatjara in its efforts to improve the situation on the Lands and to assist traditional owners in relation to APY’s functions under the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981.

  10. Ensure anthropological and other research reports are prepared to an acceptable standard for the purpose of work requirements.

  11. Assist in the preparation of grant applications for anthropology as well as contributing anthropological perspective to submissions by other segments of the organization.

  12. Liaise with relevant organisations and individuals; represent Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara in meetings and other forums as required.

  13. Support the maintenance and transmission of Anangu cultural knowledge and practices.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Formal qualifications in anthropology at Honours or post graduate level
  • Field-work and research experience with Indigenous people
  • Demonstrated ethnographic and/or oral history interview field work skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects within budget and agreed time frames
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a cross-cultural and complex social environment, including ability to facilitate conflict
  • Flexibility to undertake fieldwork and ability to work under pressure with demonstrated logistical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to provide strategic project assessments with practical outcomes.

  • Current drivers license

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Western Desert ethnography and society.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of community development principles and how community development can be applied in cross-cultural settings
  • Site recording knowledge and experience, site conservation and heritage management
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems and an understanding of data management practices.
  • 4wd experience – understanding of the Australian bush and associated dangers

Ranger Training Co-ordinator


Location: Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, SA
Responsible to: Program Manager, APY Land Management


Position Summary:
The role of the Training Officer is to coordinate and support the development of APY Land Management Ranger Trainees, APY Programs Training and report on outcomes.
The objective of the project is to develop Indigenous rangers who have the ability to coordinate Land Management across 5 Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA’s) and the “Working on Country” programs.
The Training Co-ordinator will work alongside other APY Land Management programs to develop the leadership and project management skills of the Ranger Trainees and other APY Program Training needs.
The Training Co-ordinator should have a keen interest in the people, culture and ecology of central Australia, as well as the ability to live and safely operate in a remote location.
