Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) held a Special General Meeting (SGM), on Friday 6th November, 2015 at 11am.

The meeting was well attended by 60 Anangu from the APY communities. The member communities and outstation were 80% represented at the Special General Meeting.

As the Interim APY General Manager and representative of the APY Executive board, I am pleased to announce that the dispute in regards to the employment and matter of unfair dismissal of Mr. Kevin Chan has now been resolved amicably. The APY Board and the Interim General Manager, Mr. Richard King acknowledge the achievements(1) that Mr. Kevin Chan had made during his previous tenure as the Financial Controller of APY and decided to resolve the matter.

APY EXECUTIVE DISAPPOINTED BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO BUILDING STRONGER GOVERNANCE

The democratically elected body representing 2,500 Anangu living on the APY Lands is very unhappy with the passing of the South Australian Government’s Bill to allow a Minister to suspend the board for any reason.

“This is a very sad day for us,” said APY chairman, Bernard Singer. “Our fathers fought hard for Land Rights, this bill has effectively turned back the clock 30 plus years.”

SA GOVERNMENT RAMS THROUGH LAWS TO ALLOW AN INTERVENTION ON APY LANDS

The South Australian Labor Government has succeeded in pushing through discriminatory legislation through the upper house, which will mean Minister Hunter can stage an intervention on the APY Lands.

If the Bill is endorsed by the lower house, it will mean Minister Hunter can suspend the board and appoint an Administrator, who will have complete control over APY.
